Flare

A Decision Intelligence Platform for FLexible, Agile, Resilient and Energy-aware Processes

FLARE aims to make Europe’s energy-intensive industries resilient to energy volatility by fusing AI-driven decision intelligence, digital twins, and proactive energy orchestration into a single platform. Across chemical, steel, and cement living labs, it targets 10–15% energy cost savings and 15–20% CO₂ reductions.

The challenge is structural: Europe’s energy-intensive industries run on production systems designed for stable, fossil-based energy input. That rigidity limits their ability to follow intermittent renewable supply, exposes them to price and grid volatility, and constrains the EU’s path towards its 2040 target of a 90% GHG emission reduction. FLARE tackles the barriers that keep flexibility out of reach, process design, system complexity and integration, the trade-off between flexibility and efficiency, holistic sustainability and investment assessment, and workforce readiness and change management.

Its mission is an adaptive, self-optimising manufacturing ecosystem where production lines reconfigure in real time alongside operators, planners and designers, supported by digital twins, AI and predictive analytics. Energy-aware scheduling, self-healing control systems and human–machine collaboration keep plants productive, sustainable and resilient under disruption. Three industrial pilots: Givaudan (chemical), Sidenor (steel) and Baştaş Çimento (cement) act as living laboratories, also targeting 10–15% waste reduction and flexible response times of 10–15 minutes, while a pan-European Community of Practice guides the path from prototype to market adoption.
